Quick answers

What determines Bitcoin recovery?

The wallet that holds the keys: wallet.dat files, BIP-39 phrases, Electrum seeds and hardware devices each have their own route.

Can an address alone recover Bitcoin?

No. An address is public information; the keys that control it are the recovery material.

Are old Bitcoin wallets easier to recover?

Not by age alone, but pre-2016 wallets include weak-randomness and legacy format cases worth assessing before writing off.

Our Bitcoin wallet recovery services

Forgotten Bitcoin wallet password

You still have the encrypted wallet file (wallet.dat, .wallet or .key), but the password is gone or only partly remembered. There is no password reset: Bitcoin Core, Electrum and MultiBit each use their own encryption, so recovery means testing candidates against a copy of the file. Remembered fragments, patterns, years, keyboard layout or reused passwords focus the search. As long as the file exists, this is one of the more workable problems we see. How Bitcoin wallet password recovery works

Deleted or corrupted Bitcoin wallet file

You deleted the wallet by accident, the file was damaged, or the computer it lived on died. Deleted data usually stays on a hard drive until something overwrites it, so if you still have the drive, recovery is often possible. On an SSD, the TRIM function may already have cleared it. Stop using that drive now: every write shrinks the window. What to do with a corrupted wallet file

Invalid or incomplete seed phrase

The wallet rejects your phrase: a wrong word, words in the wrong order, a checksum error or missing words. Each missing position is one of 2,048 BIP-39 words; the checksum rules out most wrong combinations, but every extra gap multiplies the search by 2,048. We reconstruct phrases with up to four missing words. Feasibility depends on which positions are known, how legible the rest is and whether an old receiving address can confirm a candidate. The arithmetic of a missing seed word

Old or discontinued Bitcoin wallet

Your bitcoin sits in software that no longer runs: MultiBit, Jaxx Liberty, an old Bitcoin Core wallet, or a format modern wallets won't read. The coins are fine on the blockchain; only the container is obsolete. Legacy formats such as MultiBit's are known, so recovery works on the file itself, and reading and converting these formats is a specialty of ours. Old wallet won't open?

Damaged private key or partial backup

A water-damaged paper wallet, a partly readable printout or a private key with characters missing. If enough of the material survives, reconstruction is often still possible: a WIF private key carries its own checksum, and a known address confirms the right candidate. A BIP-38 encrypted key also needs its passphrase. Once the key is complete, you check the address and sweep it into a fresh wallet with a proper backup yourself. Paper wallet recovery

Restored Bitcoin wallet shows a zero balance

The phrase is accepted, but the wallet looks empty. A common cause is a different address type: legacy addresses start with 1, nested SegWit with 3, native SegWit with bc1q and Taproot with bc1p, and each has its own derivation path. A forgotten BIP-39 passphrase or another account number has the same effect. We check the standard paths against an address you know before anyone concludes the funds are gone. Before you contact us

Mistakes to avoid

  • Don't upload a wallet file to an online checker, recovery site or password tool. You would hand a stranger the file that controls your coins.
  • Don't import an unknown file into random wallets to see what happens, and don't run repair software on the original. Work on copies.
  • Don't keep using a drive that held a deleted wallet. Every write can overwrite what is left.
  • Don't type a partial phrase or a private key into a website or online tools.
  • Be wary of anyone who promises to rebuild a completely lost phrase from nothing.
  • Never share your phrase, private key or password, including with us. The assessment needs none of them.

Information that helps the assessment

  • Which wallet software or device you used, and roughly when.
  • What you still have: a wallet file or backup, a recovery phrase (even partial), a device, a private key or a paper wallet. Describe it; don't send it.
  • For a password: what you remember about it, such as its length, structure or the patterns you tend to use.
  • For a phrase: how many words you have, which positions are missing or uncertain, and whether it came from Electrum or a BIP-39 wallet.
  • An old receiving address, if you know one. It is public, and it lets us confirm a candidate.
  • What happened, and what you have already tried.

Boundaries

What we do not do

  • Theft, scams or a wrong address

A confirmed blockchain transaction cannot be reversed, cancelled or redirected, by us or by anyone.

  • A completely lost recovery phrase

With no phrase, wallet file, device, backup or partial information left, there is nothing to reconstruct from.

  • Guaranteed outcomes

No honest service can guarantee success. Whether recovery is possible depends on what you still have, and the assessment tells you before you commit.

We tell you honestly what is realistic before you commit — including when the answer is no.

How it works

A clear process from first contact to handover.

  1. Tell us what happened

Share the wallet or software name, approximate year, device, problem and what material still exists. Do not send a seed phrase, private key, password, wallet file or ID document.

  2. Initial feasibility view

Once we have enough information, we usually explain the likely recovery route, the main uncertainties and an initial indication of duration.

  3. Verify and agree

We verify identity and ownership or legal authority. Scope, working method, fee and sensitive-material handling are agreed in writing before sensitive work begins.

  4. Transfer or hand over material

PGP, our secure encrypted upload environment, in-person handover or agreed shipment may be used. We request only what is needed and work with copies where possible.

  5. Technical recovery

We test the agreed recovery route in a controlled environment. You receive meaningful updates when findings affect the outlook, scope or next decision.

  6. Client-controlled handover

Access is handed back through the agreed route. You open the wallet and move the assets to a wallet you control; case material is then handled according to the agreement and privacy policy.

Good to know about Bitcoin wallet recovery

  • Access, not coins. Your bitcoin is on the blockchain; the wallet holds the keys that reach it. Recovery means restoring access to keys, passwords or recovery phrases, whichever software you used. Formats differ per wallet, so the first step is identifying what you actually have.
  • Electrum is not BIP-39. Electrum uses the same 2,048 words but its own seed format, so restore an Electrum seed in Electrum itself. With only the wallet file and a forgotten password, the route is a password search against its encryption. Electrum seeds compared with BIP-39
  • Old wallet.dat files in new Bitcoin Core. Bitcoin Core 30.0 and later no longer load legacy wallet files. They must be migrated first, and an encrypted wallet can only be migrated with its password, so keep the original untouched and work on a copy. Restoring an old wallet.dat
  • Hardware wallets. With a Ledger, Trezor or BitBox, the device or its recovery phrase is the route. The coins never live on the device, and the PIN only protects the keys on it. When a hardware wallet breaks

Bitcoin wallet recovery FAQ

Can an inaccessible Bitcoin wallet be recovered?

It depends on what you still have. A wallet file with a forgotten password, a drive the wallet was deleted from, or a seed phrase with a few missing words are all workable starting points; a wallet with no remaining material at all is not. The free assessment tells you which side your case falls on.

Can I recover a Bitcoin wallet without the password?

If the wallet has a recovery phrase and you still have it, restore the phrase in the same or a compatible wallet and set a new password. Bitcoin Core has never generated a recovery phrase, so for a wallet.dat the password is the only way in, and recovery means a password search on a copy of the file. Why Bitcoin Core has no recovery phrase

Can you help if I have the password but not the wallet file?

Not with the password alone: it decrypts a file, and without that file it opens nothing. If the file was deleted from a drive you still have, or you can still find an old backup copy, that is a different case.

How long does Bitcoin wallet recovery take?

Standard cases take a few days to a few weeks; complex searches can take months. The free assessment tells you what to expect, based on what is missing and what you still have. How long crypto wallet recovery takes

How much does crypto wallet recovery cost?

It depends on the wallet's value and how complex the case is: our success fee runs from 20% of the recovered amount down to 2%. The exact rate is agreed in writing before any work starts — no hidden costs and no hourly rates.

Do you take custody of the assets at any point?

No. We restore access; you open the wallet and move the funds yourself. We cannot initiate a transaction on your behalf.

Do I need to send my seed phrase or password?

No — first contact needs no sensitive material, and we never ask for it through forms or chat. Under a written agreement we can work with copies of wallet files in a controlled environment, so your keys stay under your control.

What if my wallet was stolen or I was scammed?

We do not take stolen-crypto or scam cases, and blockchain transactions cannot be reversed. That is a police and legal matter.

Start your recovery

The assessment is free and needs no sensitive material. Describe what you still have and we will review whether recovery is realistic. You only pay if the recovery succeeds.
