Quick answers

What backup does Blockstream Green use?

The backup depends on how the wallet was created. Current wallets use a 12- or 24-word phrase; older password-protected GreenAddress wallets can use a 27-word phrase. Two-factor accounts also require the relevant recovery details.

Does 2FA change recovery?

Legacy 2FA accounts normally require an additional factor to spend. Blockstream provides a reset procedure with a waiting period; some funds can be spent without 2FA once their timelock expires. The route depends on the account and the particular funds. New 2FA accounts are no longer offered.

What is the timeout on Green wallets?

Two-factor accounts add a timed recovery delay by design. It is a security feature, not a bug or a lost wallet.

Our Blockstream Green recovery services

Incomplete or invalid Green recovery phrase

Words are missing, unreadable or in the wrong order, or the app reports an invalid recovery phrase. We reconstruct phrases with up to four missing words, testing candidates against an address you know; how far a search can go depends on which positions are known. Green wallet recovery guide

Forgotten BIP-39 passphrase

A BIP-39 passphrase turns the same recovery phrase into a separate, hidden wallet. A wrong or missing passphrase silently opens a different, empty wallet, and Blockstream cannot recover a forgotten one. On a Singlesig wallet, remembered structural details can focus a search; on a legacy 2FA account, the applicable spending or 2FA-reset procedure must also be established. Every forgotten passphrase needs a case-specific assessment, and there is no shortcut around it. Forgotten passphrase

Lost 2FA on a Green multisig account

A 2FA Protected account, formerly Multisig Shield, is a 2-of-2 multisig: one key is yours and backed up by the recovery phrase, the other sits with Blockstream behind 2FA. If one 2FA method still works, use it to replace the lost one. If all are lost, we carefully establish which route applies to which coins before a 2FA reset is requested. Multisig wallets explained

Green wallet restored with a zero balance

A restore that shows nothing has usually opened the wrong wallet: a missing, extra or mistyped passphrase, a different recovery phrase, the wrong account type, testnet instead of mainnet, or an archived account. A 2FA Protected wallet restores only in the Blockstream App; in another wallet, its words build an unrelated, empty single-signature wallet. When the balance still does not appear, we check the standard account range against an address you know. Zero balance after a restore

Forgotten Green PIN or lost phone

The app PIN only locks this installation of the app; it is not the backup. Reinstalling the app, on the same or a new phone, and restoring from the recovery phrase replaces it with a new PIN. Without the phrase, neither you nor Blockstream can reset the PIN or regain access, so keep the current installation until a usable recovery route is confirmed. If the phrase then turns out to be incomplete, the search starts from what survives. Incomplete recovery phrase

27-word phrase with a forgotten password

Older GreenAddress and Green wallets could protect the recovery phrase with a password, which produced a 27-word phrase. It restores only with the Password protected option switched on and that exact password, which is not the same as a BIP-39 passphrase. A forgotten password is a password-recovery case: remembered fragments, such as its length or structure, can focus a search. Wallet password recovery

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Don't uninstall the app or reset the phone while the wallet still opens. Back up the recovery phrase from the app's Security tab first, and keep the current installation until a usable recovery route is confirmed.
  • Never enter a Green phrase into a website or "verification" tool.
  • Don't type a 2FA Protected wallet's phrase into another wallet app to check it. It restores only in the Blockstream App.
  • Don't switch on Password protected for a 12- or 24-word phrase. The option is only for 27-word phrases, and with it a valid phrase shows as invalid.
  • Don't request a 2FA reset while one 2FA method still works; use that method to replace the lost one.
  • Don't leave the 2FA without a backup. Back it up the same way you back up the phrase, because losing both is the worst combination.
  • Never share your recovery phrase, passphrase or 2FA codes with anyone, including us, to get an assessment.

Information that helps the assessment

  • Which app created the wallet: Blockstream Green, the Blockstream App or an older GreenAddress version, and roughly when.
  • The account type: Singlesig or 2FA Protected, and for a 2FA account which methods were set up and whether an email address was registered.
  • What remains of the recovery phrase (12, 24 or 27 words), including words that are partial or uncertain. Describe what you have; don't send the words.
  • Whether you used a BIP-39 passphrase or a password for a 27-word phrase, and anything you remember about it.
  • Old emails from GreenAddress or Blockstream with recovery files, if 2FA funds date from before 2021.
  • A receiving address you know belongs to the wallet, if you have one.
  • What happened, and what you have already tried.

Boundaries

What we do not do

  • Theft, scams or a wrong address

A confirmed blockchain transaction cannot be reversed, cancelled or redirected, by us or by anyone.

  • A completely lost recovery phrase

With no phrase, wallet file, device, backup or partial information left, there is nothing to reconstruct from.

  • Guaranteed outcomes

No honest service can guarantee success. Whether recovery is possible depends on what you still have, and the assessment tells you before you commit.

We tell you honestly what is realistic before you commit — including when the answer is no.

How it works

A clear process from first contact to handover.

  1. Tell us what happened

Share the wallet or software name, approximate year, device, problem and what material still exists. Do not send a seed phrase, private key, password, wallet file or ID document.

  2. Initial feasibility view

Once we have enough information, we usually explain the likely recovery route, the main uncertainties and an initial indication of duration.

  3. Verify and agree

We verify identity and ownership or legal authority. Scope, working method, fee and sensitive-material handling are agreed in writing before sensitive work begins.

  4. Transfer or hand over material

PGP, our secure encrypted upload environment, in-person handover or agreed shipment may be used. We request only what is needed and work with copies where possible.

  5. Technical recovery

We test the agreed recovery route in a controlled environment. You receive meaningful updates when findings affect the outlook, scope or next decision.

  6. Client-controlled handover

Access is handed back through the agreed route. You open the wallet and move the assets to a wallet you control; case material is then handled according to the agreement and privacy policy.

Good to know about Blockstream Green recovery

  • Green is now the Blockstream App. The wallet is designed around security, which also means more than one thing can lock it. It handles Bitcoin on-chain, Lightning and Liquid; Bitcoin and Liquid share one wallet, while testnet wallets are separate.
  • The word count tells you the product. It depends on which Green product created the wallet and is not a setting you can change later: current wallets use 12 or 24 words, legacy password-protected GreenAddress wallets 27. Identify which one created yours before you restore anything; the wrong length simply fails.
  • No new 2FA accounts. Since May 2025, new 2FA Protected accounts can no longer be created. Existing ones keep working and still need either the second factor or one of Blockstream's recovery routes to spend.
  • 2FA timelocks. Each deposit to a 2FA Protected account has its own timelock: by default 51,840 Bitcoin blocks, about 360 days; on Liquid, 65,535 blocks, about 45 days. After it expires, those coins can be spent with your key alone. A 2FA reset takes at least a year before you can spend.
  • Older 2FA funds. On 25 January 2021 Green switched from nLockTime to CheckSequenceVerify timelocks. Coins received before then can only be spent without Blockstream through pre-signed nLockTime transactions that were emailed to you, which exist only if an email address was set in advance, so search old mailboxes for them. Blockstream's open-source garecovery tool works with those files, and with the recovery phrase alone for later coins once their timelock has passed.

Blockstream Green wallet recovery FAQ

Can I restore my Green wallet in Electrum or another wallet?

Only a Singlesig wallet. A 2FA Protected wallet, formerly Multisig Shield, uses a multisig security model and restores only in the Blockstream App. Another wallet accepts the words and then builds an unrelated, empty single-signature wallet, while the coins stay in the original multisig setup.

Can Blockstream recover my wallet or reset my PIN?

No. Blockstream does not store your recovery phrase and cannot retrieve it, and without the phrase the PIN cannot be reset either. On a 2FA Protected account, Blockstream holds only the second key, which cannot spend without yours.

Can a Green wallet be recovered without the recovery phrase?

Only while the app still opens: then you can view and back up the phrase from the Security tab. With no phrase, no passphrase and no wallet export, the keys are gone with the seed.

How long does Green wallet recovery take?

Most cases take a few days to a few weeks; complex searches can take months. A route that depends on a 2FA timelock or a 2FA reset takes as long as that waiting period, which can be about a year. After the free assessment you get a realistic estimate.

How much does crypto wallet recovery cost?

It depends on the wallet's value and how complex the case is: our success fee runs from 20% of the recovered amount down to 2%. The exact rate is agreed in writing before any work starts — no hidden costs and no hourly rates.

Do you take custody of the assets at any point?

No. We restore access; you open the wallet and move the funds yourself. We cannot initiate a transaction on your behalf.

Do I need to send my seed phrase or password?

No — first contact needs no sensitive material, and we never ask for it through forms or chat. Under a written agreement we can work with copies of wallet files in a controlled environment, so your keys stay under your control.

What if my wallet was stolen or I was scammed?

We do not take stolen-crypto or scam cases, and blockchain transactions cannot be reversed. That is a police and legal matter.

Start your recovery

The assessment is free and needs no sensitive material. Describe what you still have and we will review whether recovery is realistic. You only pay if the recovery succeeds.
