Quick answers

What can restore an Exodus wallet?

The 12-word secret key can restore the wallet. A previously configured mobile cloud backup or an accessible synced device may also provide access. The app password may still unlock surviving local data; it is not a replacement for a backup.

Can I restore Exodus from an old email backup?

Yes, if you still have a backup link from a wallet created before February 2019 and the password used when the link was made. It contains an encrypted backup of the secret key. Later password changes do not update that link, and new email backup links can no longer be created.

I restored and assets are missing. What now?

Re-enable the assets and networks you used and confirm that you restored the correct account and derivation path; a wallet may not display them until you enable them again.

Our Exodus recovery services

Forgotten Exodus password

On Exodus Desktop the password encrypts the wallet files on that computer; on Exodus Mobile a passcode or the phone's own lock protects the app. A forgotten password is not a lost wallet: the 12-word secret key restores the wallet without it, and you set a new one. Without the words, Exodus cannot reset the password. If the encrypted wallet data survives, we work on a copy of it and search for the password with candidates built from what you remember. Forgot your wallet password?

Invalid or incomplete 12-word secret key

Every Exodus wallet has a 12-word secret key, its BIP-39 recovery phrase, so a phrase of another length came from a different wallet. If words are missing, unreadable or in an uncertain order, we first check which error the app reports. We reconstruct phrases with up to four missing words, when the known words, their positions and an address you know leave a workable search. Incomplete recovery phrase

Forgotten email backup password

Wallets created before February 2019 may have an email backup link. The link is an encrypted copy of the secret key and opens only with the password the wallet had when the link was made: later password changes do not update it, and Exodus no longer creates new links or resends old ones. If you still have the link but not that password, we assess whether a structured search for it is feasible. Exodus backup and restore guide

Lost or broken phone or computer

The coins are recorded on the blockchain, not on the device. Without the 12 words, check the other routes Exodus supports: another device synced to the same wallet, a mobile cloud backup or a pre-2019 email backup link. If none exists, the encrypted wallet data on the old device may still hold the keys, and we assess whether it can be read and opened with your Exodus password. Wallet on a lost or broken phone

Overwritten Exodus wallet

Restoring another secret key or syncing another wallet over yours overwrites it. Exodus archives the old wallet data, including its secret key: Exodus Mobile lists previously used secret keys, and Exodus Desktop keeps the archive for 90 days. Formatting the device or uninstalling Exodus deletes that archive. If the archive is gone, a forensic search of the device's storage is the last option, and what survives depends on how much the device has written since. Preserving an old wallet's data

Missing assets after a restore

A correct phrase can still look empty when an asset is not enabled yet or the phrase went into another wallet app. Exodus uses non-standard derivation paths for Cardano, Solana, Stellar and Tezos, so other wallets may not find those funds from the 12 words. We check accounts and paths against an address you know before anyone concludes the funds are gone. Zero balance after a restore

Before you contact us

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Never enter your Exodus secret key into a website. Exodus staff will never ask for it, your password or your private keys.
  • Don't uninstall Exodus Mobile if it crashes or won't open. Uninstalling can erase the secret key for good, and Recovery Mode may still show it.
  • Don't restore another phrase or sync another wallet onto the device that holds the wallet you need: that overwrites it.
  • Don't reinstall Exodus, reset the device or format the drive before the wallet data is preserved. Uninstalling or formatting also deletes the archive of an overwritten wallet.
  • Don't share an email backup link or a sync QR code. Each carries an encrypted copy of your secret key.
  • Never send your 12 words or passwords to anyone, including us, to get an assessment.

Information that helps the assessment

  • Which devices ran Exodus (Desktop on Windows, macOS or Linux; Mobile on iOS or Android) and whether they still start.
  • Roughly when the wallet was created. For a wallet from before February 2019, look for an email from no-reply@exodus.io titled "Exodus Backup Link".
  • What remains of the 12-word secret key, including words that are partial or uncertain. Describe what you have; don't send the words.
  • Which backups you set up: an email backup link, a mobile cloud backup (passkey, or an older email or SMS confirmation) or a synced device.
  • What you remember about the Exodus password, or the password the wallet had when the email backup was made.
  • Whether the wallet was overwritten, when that happened and what the device has done since.
  • Which assets and networks you held, and a public address you know.

Boundaries

What we do not do

  • Theft, scams or a wrong address

A confirmed blockchain transaction cannot be reversed, cancelled or redirected, by us or by anyone.

  • A completely lost recovery phrase

With no phrase, wallet file, device, backup or partial information left, there is nothing to reconstruct from.

  • Guaranteed outcomes

No honest service can guarantee success. Whether recovery is possible depends on what you still have, and the assessment tells you before you commit.

We tell you honestly what is realistic before you commit — including when the answer is no.

How it works

A clear process from first contact to handover.

  1. Tell us what happened

Share the wallet or software name, approximate year, device, problem and what material still exists. Do not send a seed phrase, private key, password, wallet file or ID document.

  2. Initial feasibility view

Once we have enough information, we usually explain the likely recovery route, the main uncertainties and an initial indication of duration.

  3. Verify and agree

We verify identity and ownership or legal authority. Scope, working method, fee and sensitive-material handling are agreed in writing before sensitive work begins.

  4. Transfer or hand over material

PGP, our secure encrypted upload environment, in-person handover or agreed shipment may be used. We request only what is needed and work with copies where possible.

  5. Technical recovery

We test the agreed recovery route in a controlled environment. You receive meaningful updates when findings affect the outlook, scope or next decision.

  6. Client-controlled handover

Access is handed back through the agreed route. You open the wallet and move the assets to a wallet you control; case material is then handled according to the agreement and privacy policy.

Good to know about Exodus recovery

  • The 12 words are the master key. The secret key, which Exodus also calls the secret recovery phrase, restores the wallet in Exodus without the old password. Back up the 12 words even when you use another backup method.
  • Mobile cloud backup. A backup made with a passkey in iCloud or Google Drive needs both the backup and that passkey, and restores in Exodus Mobile on the same operating system (iOS or Android) that created it.
  • Older cloud backups. Backups made before November 2024 with an email or SMS confirmation can still be restored that way, after a seven-day waiting period. You need the original cloud account, the registered email address or phone number and the same operating system; Exodus then requires upgrading the backup to a passkey.
  • Synced devices and local data. A synced device that still opens can show the secret key. If only encrypted local data remains, the Exodus password may open it, so preserve that data before reinstalling or resetting anything.
  • Password attempts on Desktop. Exodus Desktop has no lockout and allows unlimited password attempts, so trying the candidates you remember costs nothing. A structured search starts where your own list runs out.

Exodus wallet recovery FAQ

Can Exodus reset my password or recover my secret key?

No. Exodus is self-custodial: it cannot reset a forgotten password or recover lost words for you. With the 12 words you restore the wallet and set a new password.

Can you recover an Exodus wallet without the 12-word secret key?

Sometimes. Encrypted wallet data on the device may open with the Exodus password, an email backup link opens with the password the wallet had at the time, and an overwritten wallet's archive can still hold the old key. With no phrase, no usable backup, no synced device and no recoverable wallet data, there is nothing left to restore or examine, and guessing a completely unknown 12-word phrase without any clues is not feasible.

Is the Exodus secret key the same as a seed phrase?

Yes. It is a standard 12-word BIP-39 seed phrase, which Exodus also calls the secret recovery phrase. Other BIP-39 wallets can read it, but they only find the funds where their derivation paths match the ones Exodus uses.

How much does crypto wallet recovery cost?

It depends on the wallet's value and how complex the case is: our success fee runs from 20% of the recovered amount down to 2%. The exact rate is agreed in writing before any work starts — no hidden costs and no hourly rates.

Do you take custody of the assets at any point?

No. We restore access; you open the wallet and move the funds yourself. We cannot initiate a transaction on your behalf.

Do I need to send my seed phrase or password?

No — first contact needs no sensitive material, and we never ask for it through forms or chat. Under a written agreement we can work with copies of wallet files in a controlled environment, so your keys stay under your control.

What if my wallet was stolen or I was scammed?

We do not take stolen-crypto or scam cases, and blockchain transactions cannot be reversed. That is a police and legal matter.

Start your recovery

The assessment is free and needs no sensitive material. Describe what you still have and we will review whether recovery is realistic. You only pay if the recovery succeeds.
