There is no single answer to “how do I recover my MetaMask wallet,” because the right recovery path depends entirely on what you still have. Someone with a complete Secret Recovery Phrase and a lost password is in a completely different position from someone who has neither. This guide maps each common scenario to the steps that actually apply, so you can skip the sections that do not match your situation and go straight to the one that does.
One thing is true in every scenario: your crypto is not inside MetaMask. Your tokens, ETH, and NFTs live on the blockchain. MetaMask is the window through which you view and interact with them. Losing access to MetaMask does not mean losing your assets, it means losing the key to the door. The question is always whether that key can be reconstructed.
Scenario 1: You Have Your Secret Recovery Phrase
This is the simplest and most common recovery. If you have the 12 words you wrote down when you first created the wallet, you can restore access on any device, any browser, at any time. The phrase is the master key to every account MetaMask ever derived from it.
Install or reinstall the MetaMask extension (on Chrome, Firefox, Brave, or Edge) or the MetaMask mobile app. During setup, choose “Import using Secret Recovery Phrase.” Type all 12 words in the exact order, in lowercase, separated by single spaces. Set a new password, and the wallet rebuilds itself. If you had more than one account, click “Create Account” as many times as needed to regenerate them, each additional account is deterministically derived from the same phrase.
If MetaMask rejects the phrase, the problem is almost always a misspelled word, two words in the wrong order, or a word that does not belong to the BIP-39 wordlist. Scenario 2: You Forgot Your Password but Have the Phrase
If you cannot log in but your phrase is safe, the fix is to reset the wallet. Click “Forgot password?” on the MetaMask login screen, enter your 12 words, and set a new password. The old password is discarded. This is exactly what MetaMask was designed for: the phrase is the permanent key, and the password is just the local lock on one device. Scenario 3: You Forgot Your Password and Lost the Phrase
This is the scenario that brings most people to a recovery specialist. Without the phrase, you cannot reset the password, and without the password, you cannot open the vault. But if the vault file still exists on the original device, the password can be recovered by testing candidates against it.
The vault is a JSON file stored in the browser’s extension directory. It contains your seed phrase, encrypted with the PBKDF2 key derivation function and locked behind the password you chose. Open-source tools like Hashcat and John the Ripper can test millions of password candidates against this file. The more detail you can provide about what the password might have been, the more targeted the search becomes. Scenario 4: You Deleted or Uninstalled MetaMask
If you still have the Secret Recovery Phrase, deleting MetaMask changes nothing. Reinstall it, import the phrase, and the wallet is back. If you do not have the phrase, the question is whether the vault data survived the uninstall. Removing the MetaMask extension does not always remove its data directory, and even when it does, the data may persist on the drive’s unallocated space until it is overwritten by new files.
Stop using the device immediately. Every new file written to the drive increases the risk that the old vault data is overwritten. Contact a recovery specialist who can make a forensic copy of the drive and attempt to carve the vault from remaining fragments.
Scenario 5: Your Wallet Shows Zero Balance After Restore
You entered the phrase correctly, MetaMask accepted it, but the balance reads zero. This almost never means the phrase is wrong. MetaMask defaults to showing one account on the Ethereum mainnet. If your tokens were on a second or third account, on Polygon, Binance Smart Chain, or another custom network, or if they are ERC-20 tokens that MetaMask does not auto-detect, they will not appear until you add them.
Check these things in order. First, click “Create Account” to regenerate any additional accounts. Second, switch to every custom network you previously used (Settings, Networks, Add Network). Third, add specific tokens manually using their contract address, which you can find on a block explorer like Etherscan. If the balance still reads zero after all of that, paste your wallet address into Etherscan and check the on-chain balance directly. If Etherscan shows funds, the issue is MetaMask’s display, not your recovery.
Scenario 6: You Only Have a Private Key
A private key restores one specific account, not the entire wallet. If you exported a private key before losing access, you can import it into a new MetaMask installation by clicking “Import Account” and pasting the key. This gives you access to the tokens held by that single address, but not to any other accounts that were part of the same wallet.
If you have private keys for multiple accounts, import each one separately. Keep in mind that a private key grants full control over the associated address, so treat it with the same care as your Secret Recovery Phrase.
Scenario 7: Your MetaMask Was Hacked or Drained
If your wallet has been drained by someone who obtained your seed phrase or exploited a malicious token approval, the situation is fundamentally different from a lost-access problem.
