A forgotten MetaMask password locks you out of the extension, not the funds: what decides how you get back in is whether you still have the Secret Recovery Phrase.

If your MetaMask wallet was created by signing in with a Google, Apple or Telegram account, the recovery route is different: you need access to that account and the MetaMask password. The social account alone does not replace a forgotten MetaMask password. If you previously revealed and backed up the Secret Recovery Phrase, you can restore with that phrase; otherwise, do not reset MetaMask and contact official MetaMask Support before changing the installation.

What the MetaMask password actually protects

The password only encrypts the Secret Recovery Phrase and private keys on this device; it does not touch the funds, which stay on the blockchain. Without the password you cannot log in or send transactions, but the crypto itself is not gone, and you can still reset your wallet using the 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase.

For a MetaMask wallet set up with a Secret Recovery Phrase, the password unlocks a particular installation. The recovery phrase restores the accounts derived from that phrase on another device. It does not contain separately imported private keys or the keys held by a connected hardware wallet. During setup, you choose the password and MetaMask gives you the phrase to back up securely.

Many people who write to us about a forgotten MetaMask password don’t use it often. Sometimes, in an effort to protect their wallet, they create a password that’s too complex and end up locking themselves out when they need access the most.

Preserve the original installation before resetting

Do not reset MetaMask, remove the extension, clear browser data or discard the original device until you have confirmed a working recovery route. A MetaMask reset removes the wallets and accounts from that installation. For a wallet created with a Secret Recovery Phrase, verify the phrase and a working recovery route for every other account before proceeding, including separately imported private keys and connected hardware wallets. For a wallet created with Google, Apple or Telegram, confirm access to both the external account and the MetaMask password.

If the phrase is missing, the encrypted vault in the original browser profile may be the only material against which password candidates can be tested. Preserve the entire browser profile before making changes, work only from a copy, and never upload the vault, phrase, private keys or password hints to an online “recovery” tool.

MetaMask password requirements

MetaMask asks for a password of at least eight characters and enforces nothing else: no required uppercase letter, digit or symbol. Knowing that helps when you rebuild a list of candidates, because the password is whatever you chose, not something MetaMask shaped for you.

Try to remember the password

Start with the combinations you’ve used before. Going through familiar patterns can bring the right one back. Many people still add some uppercase letters, digits or symbols out of habit, so your own habits from that time are the best guide.

We recommend building a password hint list. It may include important dates, pet names, anniversaries, favorite words, family names, or the year when you created the wallet. Writing the list down is often enough on its own to bring the password back. Double-check your keyboard language settings and make sure Caps Lock isn’t on.

Reset your MetaMask password with your Secret Recovery Phrase

The easiest way back into your MetaMask wallet is to reset the password with your Secret Recovery Phrase:

• On the MetaMask unlock screen, click “Forgot password”, or reinstall the extension and choose “Import using Secret Recovery Phrase”
• Enter your 12-word phrase in the correct order, in lowercase and with single spaces between words
• Set a new password
• Access your wallet again

The phrase won’t restore the wallet

A password reset usually fails because the Secret Recovery Phrase itself is lost or entered incorrectly. A phrase has to meet three requirements before it can reset the MetaMask password:

• All the words must come from the BIP-39 word list, so even a small mistake breaks the phrase. Check every word for typos and misspellings.
• The word count must be a valid BIP-39 length — 12, 15, 18, 21 or 24. MetaMask creates 12 by default but will import any of these; 13 or 20 words is never valid.
• The words also need to be in the exact order you received them. Swap two words and the phrase will usually fail MetaMask’s checksum — and if a swapped order happens to pass, it restores a different, empty wallet rather than yours.

Recover the MetaMask password from the encrypted vault

If you’ve lost your MetaMask password and don’t have your 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase, but you still have access to the same computer and browser where MetaMask was used, you still have a chance.

Doing it yourself: hashcat and BTCRecover

Open-source password tools such as hashcat, which has a dedicated MetaMask mode, and BTCRecover can test candidates against your vault, but setup is technical and fake “recovery tool” downloads are a common way wallets get emptied. Download these tools only from their official sites, never from search-ad links. They work on MetaMask’s encrypted vault, a small file in the browser extension’s data folder on the original device that holds the Secret Recovery Phrase encrypted with your password (PBKDF2 key derivation, AES-GCM encryption): if you no longer have that computer or browser profile, there is nothing to test against. The vault is what gets tested, not MetaMask’s servers. A specialist runs the same search for you.

What if you have lost both the password and the phrase?

If you have lost both the MetaMask password and the Secret Recovery Phrase, the outcome depends on what remains. If the original encrypted vault still exists, it remains a recovery target. Even if the extension was removed or the browser data cleared, parts of the vault can sometimes still be found on the original drive, depending on the type of drive and how much has been written to it since. Remembered password details can help focus an offline candidate search. If there is no recovery phrase, surviving vault, exported private key or active access, there is no recovery material; neither MetaMask nor a recovery service can recreate missing key material.
