Professional Crypto Recovery: Behind the Scenes

In short

Professional crypto wallet recovery starts with assessing the wallet and the remaining material, then agreeing scope and fee in writing before technical work begins. The work can mean testing password candidates, reconstructing partial recovery phrases or assessing damaged wallet data. At Crypto Recovers you keep control of your assets, and a first inquiry never needs passwords, keys or recovery words.

Professional Crypto Recovery: Behind the Scenes

You’ve been locked out of a wallet, you still have something to work with — a wallet file, or a phrase with gaps — and you’re deciding whether to hand the case to a recovery company. Before you do, it helps to know how professional crypto recovery works: what actually happens after that first message, and which cases no company can take on. Don’t rush in the meantime. Keep every file, device and note you have, and change nothing until you know whether your case fits.

Common scenarios that require professional crypto wallet recovery

The cases that reach us fall into a few recurring shapes. A recovery phrase with a few words missing or in the wrong order, which locks the wallet completely even though most of the phrase is right. A forgotten wallet password, where the encrypted file still exists and the work is a candidate search against a copy of it. A wallet file that is corrupted, or was deleted from a drive, where data recovery comes before anything else. And a hardware wallet that has stopped working. Hardware-wallet PINs are a different matter: we do not extract or crack them, and no provider should promise that.

In practice that covers:

  • Hardware wallet malfunctions (Ledger, Trezor, KeepKey, Coldcard)
  • Partial loss of recovery phrases (for example MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Phantom, Electrum or Exodus)
  • Forgotten wallet passwords (for example MultiBit, Electrum, Armory or Blockchain.com)
  • Corrupted wallet files (Bitcoin Core’s wallet.dat, and the wallet files of Electrum and similar file-based wallets)

We work with wallets holding Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin and other coins. What decides the route is the wallet software, not the coin.

Professional crypto wallet recovery techniques

Take a password search, which is less mysterious than it sounds. We copy the encrypted wallet file, extract its password hash where the format allows, and test candidate passwords against that hash on GPU hardware, offline. The candidates come from you: the words, dates and habits you remember turn an open-ended search into a bounded one. Depending on how much you remember, the search tests your own list of candidates, runs brute force through every combination of characters within set limits, or combines the two in a hybrid search, such as a word you remember followed by varying digits or symbols. For a BIP-39 phrase, reconstruction works the same way with different material: for each uncertain position the search runs through the 2,048-word BIP-39 list, and an old receiving address confirms a hit. Deleted files may first need to be recovered with forensic tools from a preserved disk image; damaged wallet data may need repair before a password search is possible.

You don’t need to understand any of that to bring us a case. What matters is what you still have and what you remember.

We’ve had clients who spent years trying on their own, learned Python and read every forum thread before contacting us. What a specialist adds is the part that is hard to do at home: extracting the exact hash format, and running a structured candidate list on GPU systems instead of guessing by hand.

Case study: Bitcoin wallet recovery from a deleted wallet.dat

A client found us through our website after accidentally deleting a Bitcoin Core wallet file, the wallet.dat, from both the computer and the trash bin.

We met with the client in person at our office to go over the issue in detail and talk about the recovery plan and process. We signed the service contract during our first meeting and received the client’s hard drive to begin the recovery process.

It took our team about a week to retrieve the deleted wallet file. But once we had it back, another problem surfaced: the wallet was encrypted, and the client had forgotten the password. We asked for every password the client might have used in that period and the habits behind them, built a candidate list from that, and tested it against a copy of the file. After several more days of testing, one of the candidates opened the wallet.

When you request professional crypto wallet recovery

1. Initial contact and case assessment

The first assessment is free. We ask which wallet and device you used, what happened and what material remains, without asking you to send sensitive information. Parts of a password, an incomplete phrase or a backup file may give us something to assess; with no usable material, there is no search to run.

2. Agreement and terms

If there is a realistic route, a written agreement sets out the work, success-based commission and what happens if the case fails. No recovery, no fee is the normal basis, and we never take payment upfront. We never guarantee a result, and we explain when the evidence shows that a search is not workable. See our pricing for the fee details. Before any material changes hands, we also verify your identity and your ownership of the wallet, or your legal authority as an heir, executor or representative.

3. Secure data sharing

After the agreement, any material needed for the work moves through the secure method agreed for the case: encrypted email (PGP), an encrypted upload or an in-person handover at our Amsterdam office. It never goes through the contact form or chat. Wherever the format allows it, we test a copy rather than your original.

4. The recovery process

Technical work takes place in a controlled offline environment. Standard cases can take a few days to a few weeks; complex cases can take months. We provide a case-specific estimate after assessment and stay in touch throughout. The recovery-time guide explains what affects that estimate.

5. Verification and return of access

When access is restored, we notify you; you move your own funds to a new wallet you created and only then pay the agreed fee yourself.

6. Post-recovery guidance

After the handover, we help with setting up a secure wallet and safer backup practices. The full recovery process explains each stage in more detail.

Security at Crypto Recovers

We ask for no confidential material until the agreement is signed, and material then travels only through the secure method agreed for the case. Our team signs confidentiality agreements, and an NDA with you is available on request. During the work, access to case material is limited to the specialists assigned to the case, in a controlled offline environment with logged access. We never take custody: you open the recovered wallet and move the coins yourself. Our security and data handling page sets out these commitments in full.

What to look for in a trustworthy crypto wallet recovery service

When choosing a crypto recovery provider, judge the provider on what it will show you before you commit. Ask for the process and the fee structure in writing, including what happens if the case fails. Ask which security and confidentiality practices are documented, and how your material is handled and returned. Ask for references you can check yourself rather than claims you cannot. And notice whether a provider is willing to say that a case is not workable: a guaranteed outcome, a demand for payment before any work has been done, or a request for your full recovery phrase are the clearest warning signs, whoever is making them.

Our guide to finding a legitimate recovery service goes through those checks in detail.

When we can’t help recover your crypto wallet

Not every case can be solved, and the limits are the same for every real recovery service. With nothing to start from — no seed phrase, no password, no wallet file — there is nothing to work with. A wallet that isn’t yours is not a case either, and neither is a wallet file bought online in the hope that it holds funds: ownership can’t be proven, and such listings are a scam of their own, as our guide to crypto wallet for sale scams explains. We say so at the assessment, before anything is agreed.

We don’t recover assets lost to scams, and we don’t offer tracing or scam investigations: no legitimate service can reverse a blockchain transaction. If you’ve been scammed, report it to your national fraud authority and the police.

Hiring a professional crypto wallet recovery company

A track record is something you can check. Crypto Recovers has done recoveries since 2019 and has completed 200+ recoveries; our published case studies show what the work involves. Every case follows the same order: assessment first, a written agreement second, and a fee only once you are back in your wallet.

If you still have material to work with, start with the free assessment: describe the wallet, what happened and what remains, and send no file, phrase or password at this stage.

FAQ: professional crypto wallet recovery

How long does it take to recover a crypto wallet?

The search sets the time, so there is no single answer. A password with a remembered pattern can often be found in days; a phrase with several open positions, or a drive that first has to be imaged, can take months. You get a case-specific estimate after the free assessment, and it is an estimate, not a deadline.

How much does professional wallet recovery typically cost?

At Crypto Recovers the success fee ranges from 20% down to 2% of the recovered amount, depending on the value of the wallet and the complexity of the case. The exact rate is set out in the written agreement you sign before any work starts: nothing is paid upfront, and there is no recovery fee if the case does not succeed.

How do I choose the right crypto wallet recovery service for my needs?

Match the provider to your material first: a forgotten password on an existing wallet file and a deleted file on a failing drive are different technical problems, so ask whether they have handled your wallet software before and what exactly they would test. Then check for the three clearest warning signs: a guaranteed result, a demand for payment before any work, or a request for your full recovery phrase. Any one of them ends the conversation.

Haven’t regained access yet?

A first assessment costs nothing, and you won’t need to share any wallet secrets. Describe what you still have, and we’ll tell you honestly whether recovery is realistic. If the recovery doesn’t succeed, you don’t pay.
