Forgot your Electrum password and feeling panicked? You need the Electrum password to send Bitcoins, export private keys, encrypt or decrypt the wallet, and more. If you’ve forgotten Electrum password, if you have your seed phrase, you can reset a new password or recover your wallet without it.

Unfortunately, if you don’t have the 12-word seed phrase, your recovery chances are close to zero. Read this article to learn about your options, or contact Crypto Recovers for professional help.

First Steps When You Realize You Forgot or Lost Your Electrum Password

When you realize you can’t recall the password for your Electrum wallet, your first option is to find your seed phrase and reset it. This is the easiest and most reliable method. However, many users come to us with the issue of losing both the seed phrase and the wallet password.

In this case, we recommend brute-forcing the Electrum password using Bitcoin password-cracking tools available online, or contacting a crypto recovery company like us, Crypto Recovers, to perform the brute-forcing for you. For this, we’ll ask you to provide all the possible password combinations you’ve used before, and then we do the hard work ourselves.

In the best-case scenario, it can take a few days to recover your password, or a few weeks if the password is really complex. Continue reading this article to learn more about Electrum password recovery and how to reset it yourself on your computer.

How to Set up Electrum Wallet Password?

Electrum is one of the most secure and trusted Bitcoin wallets. The Electrum password protects the local wallet file by encrypting private keys. Electrum doesn’t encrypt the wallet by default — it prompts you to set a password when creating a new wallet, but if you skipped that, you can still encrypt it anytime. We advise you to pick a password that has letters, numbers, and symbols.

Here’s how to set up your Electrum password:

  1. Open Electrum.
  2. Go to Wallet > Password in the top menu.
  3. A window will pop up. Enter a strong password, then confirm it.
  4. Click OK.

Boom — your wallet is now encrypted. Electrum will require it for every action for example sending your BTC.

Already Set an Electrum Password but Want to Change It?

Follow the same steps: Wallet > Password. Then enter the old password, and  your new one.

How to Reset Electrum Wallet Password?

If you forgot the Electrum wallet password but still have the seed, you’re lucky. Although the wallet doesn’t offer an option to recover the password, it is possible to reset a new one using the seed phrase.

Follow these Electrum password reset steps:

  1. Open Electrum
  2. Choose “Standard wallet”
  3. Select “I already have a seed”
  4. Type your seed phrase exactly as saved. Click Next.
  5. Electrum will ask you to create a new password. Keep it safe in a secure location, where no one can take advantage of it.
  6. You can now use the new password for transactions.

On the other hand, if you don’t have the seed and only have the encrypted wallet file, it becomes much harder, and you’ll need to brute-force the password or contact Crypto Recovers to do it for you.

Creating Electrum Password Hint List

Since the process of Electrum password recovery often involves brute-forcing, you need to create a list of potential passwords that have a higher probability of matching the correct one.

Here are the most useful tips:

N1: Use all passwords you have ever used: old important passwords, passwords with slight variations, combine two common passwords from different times in your life.

N2: Include personal informationlike dates, birthdays, anniversaries, names of pets.

N3: Mix with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols for example mix case randomly.

N4: Think of typo patterns or keyboard errors for example mistyping “q” as “w” or “e” as “r”.

The closer the guesses are, the higher the chances of finding the correct password.

Electrum Password Recovery FAQs

How can I recover my Electrum wallet password?

Electrum has no built-in password recovery, and it never stores your password anywhere it could be read back. If you still have your seed phrase, you don’t need the old password at all: you restore the wallet from the seed and set a new one. If the seed is gone and only the encrypted wallet file remains, the password can sometimes be found by testing candidates against that file, which is where a service like Crypto Recovers can help. If both the password and the seed are completely lost, no one can recover the wallet.

What should I do if I forgot my Electrum password but still have my seed?

You’re in the easy case. Electrum can’t reset the password on the existing file, but your seed phrase rebuilds the whole wallet from scratch. Install a fresh copy of Electrum, choose “I already have a seed,” enter your seed exactly as written, and set a new password when prompted. Your Bitcoin never moves during this, because it lives on the blockchain, not inside the app.

Can I recover an Electrum password without the seed phrase?

Only in some cases, and only if you still have the encrypted wallet file. The password can be searched by brute force, which means testing large numbers of likely passwords against the file until one fits. This works when you remember the rough shape of what you used, so the search has something to go on. A completely unknown password on a strong, long passphrase may never be found. With no wallet file and no seed, there is nothing left to work from, and recovery isn’t possible.

Which tools are used for Electrum password recovery?

The main open-source tool is BTCRecover, a Python program that runs dictionary and brute-force searches against your wallet file using a list of your likely passwords. Download it only from its official GitHub page, and run it on a computer that is disconnected from the internet, since the wallet file is the key to your Bitcoin. Be wary of any “Electrum password recovery tool” advertised in search results or forums; fake versions are a common way wallets get emptied. If the command line isn’t your world, Crypto Recovers can run the search for you.

Where is the Electrum wallet file stored?

On Windows it’s in C:\Users\<YourName>\AppData\Roaming\Electrum\wallets; on Mac or Linux it’s in ~/.electrum/wallets/. The default file is usually named default_wallet. Before attempting any recovery, copy this file somewhere safe and work only on the copy, so a failed attempt can never damage your only version.

Can Crypto Recovers recover my Electrum password?

Often, yes, if you still have the wallet file and can describe the passwords you tend to use, or if your seed is only partly lost, missing up to four words. We work with verified, open-source tooling on air-gapped machines, and we start only after a contract is signed. We can never guarantee a result. Crypto Recovers never handles or has access to your funds: if the recovery succeeds, you move your Bitcoin yourself to a new wallet you created, and pay the fee, 20% of the recovered amount under No Cure No Pay, directly to us during the handover.

Clear agreements before work begins. Before recovery work begins, both parties sign a service agreement setting out the assignment, fees, responsibilities, confidentiality and data handling. At your request, an NDA can also be signed before confidential details about your case are discussed.

Non-custodial wallet access recovery. Your wallet remains yours. We do not hold, manage or transfer your crypto-assets on your behalf. After a successful recovery, you move your funds to a new wallet yourself and pay the agreed success fee separately.
