On March 27, 2023, Jaxx Liberty was retired. The apps were pulled from every store, the website was taken offline, and the development team moved on. What they left behind was a user base that ranged from early Ethereum adopters to casual Bitcoin holders, many of whom had never exported their seed phrase, never migrated their funds, and now cannot access a wallet that no longer exists as functional software.

The good news: your crypto was never stored inside Jaxx Liberty. It lives on the blockchain, controlled by private keys that were derived from the 12-word backup phrase Jaxx generated when you first set up the wallet. If you have that phrase, recovery is straightforward. If you do not, recovery depends on what else you still have: the original device, a backup, or partial information about the phrase.

What You Need to Know Before You Start

Jaxx Liberty used the BIP-39 standard for its seed phrases: 12 English words from the standard 2,048-word list. That means the phrase is compatible with most modern wallets. However, Jaxx used non-standard derivation paths for several of the coins it supported, which is why a straightforward import into another wallet often shows a zero balance even when the phrase is correct.

Do not download any version of Jaxx Liberty from any website. The app is discontinued. Any download you find online is either an outdated version with known security vulnerabilities or, more likely, a fake designed to steal your wallet data. Recovery should happen without running Jaxx itself.

Method 1: Recover with Your 12-Word Seed Phrase

If you have your complete 12-word phrase, import it into a BIP-39-compatible wallet. The choice of wallet depends on which cryptocurrencies you held.

For Bitcoin: import into Electrum (tick “BIP39 seed” in options) or Blue Wallet. Electrum may require you to select the correct derivation path manually. Jaxx used m/44’/0’/0′ for Bitcoin. For Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens: import into MetaMask. Use the standard Ethereum path m/44’/60’/0’/0. For Litecoin: import into Electrum-LTC or a multi-coin wallet like Exodus. For other coins: use a wallet that supports the specific coin and allows custom derivation paths.

If the balance shows zero after import, the issue is almost certainly the derivation path, not the phrase. The wallet is looking at the wrong addresses. Try different address types (Legacy, SegWit) and different derivation paths. If you are not sure which path Jaxx used for a specific coin, contact us for a free assessment rather than guessing.

What If the Phrase Is Rejected?

A rejected phrase typically means one of three things: a word is misspelled (“abanon” instead of “abandon”), two words are swapped, or a word was misread from a handwritten backup (“cliff” read as “clip”). Every word must match the BIP-39 list exactly. Check each word carefully. For detailed troubleshooting, see our guide on fixing an invalid mnemonic seed.

Method 2: Recover from the Original Device

If you never wrote down your seed phrase, the next question is whether the device where Jaxx was installed still exists and still contains the wallet data.

Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux)

Jaxx Liberty stored wallet data in the user’s application data directory. On Windows, look in %APPDATA%com.liberty.jaxx or a similar path. On macOS, check ~/Library/Application Support/com.liberty.jaxx/. The exact folder name may vary by version. If the folder still contains files, the encrypted wallet data is likely intact. Do not open these files with any downloaded copy of Jaxx. Extract the data using verified open-source tools on an offline machine, or contact a specialist.

Mobile (iOS, Android)

Mobile recovery is harder because app data is sandboxed. If the Jaxx app was never uninstalled, the data may still be accessible through a device backup (iCloud, Google Cloud, or a local backup created with iTunes or similar tools). If the app was uninstalled, the data was typically removed with it. A factory-reset device has no recoverable Jaxx data.

Method 3: Recover from a Backup or Export

Before the shutdown, Jaxx Liberty offered an export function that let users save their seed phrase and private keys. If you ever used that function, check your files, email, cloud storage, or any location where you might have saved the export. An exported private key can be imported into any compatible wallet for the corresponding cryptocurrency, one address at a time.

Method 4: Recover with a Partial Seed Phrase

If you have some of the 12 words but not all of them, the phrase can sometimes be reconstructed. Each missing word requires testing 2,048 candidates against the BIP-39 checksum and the blockchain addresses tied to the wallet. For 1 to 2 missing words, this is fast. For 3 to 4 missing words, it requires significant computation but is still feasible with GPU-based tools. Beyond 4 missing words, the search space exceeds what any hardware can cover in a reasonable time.

What to Avoid

Do not download Jaxx Liberty from any website. Every copy circulating online is either compromised or non-functional. Do not enter your seed phrase into any website that claims to “check” or “validate” it. Do not share your seed phrase with anyone who contacts you offering recovery help. Legitimate recovery services do not reach out to victims proactively, and they never ask for your full seed phrase over email, DM, or chat. Jaxx Liberty Recovery FAQ

Can I still use Jaxx Liberty in 2026?

No. The app was retired on March 27, 2023. It no longer connects to any network, and its servers are permanently offline. Even if you have the app installed, it cannot send or receive transactions.

Is there a new version of Jaxx?

No. Decentral, the company behind Jaxx Liberty, has not released a successor wallet. Any app or website claiming to be “Jaxx 2.0” or “New Jaxx” is a scam.

I found my Jaxx phrase but one word does not look right. What do I do?

Check the word against the BIP-39 wordlist. If it is not in the list, it is misspelled. If it is in the list but the phrase still gets rejected, try swapping it with adjacent words or testing common misreads (“d” read as “cl”, “n” read as “m”). If you cannot resolve it, this is an ideal case for a professional assessment: a single wrong word is one of the fastest recovery scenarios.

What coins did Jaxx Liberty support?

Over 80 cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dash, Zcash, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum Classic, Dogecoin, and many ERC-20 tokens. All were derived from a single BIP-39 seed phrase.

Clear agreements before work begins. Before recovery work begins, both parties sign a service agreement setting out the assignment, fees, responsibilities, confidentiality and data handling. At your request, an NDA can also be signed before confidential details about your case are discussed.

Non-custodial wallet access recovery. Your wallet remains yours. We do not hold, manage or transfer your crypto-assets on your behalf. After a successful recovery, you move your funds to a new wallet yourself and pay the agreed success fee separately.
