Trezor Factory Reset: How to Wipe & Restore Safely
In short
A Trezor factory reset erases the wallet, PIN and settings from the device; it does not move your crypto, but it can remove your only access. Before resetting, verify the backup and any passphrase, using Trezor Suite's backup check if possible. A forgotten PIN requires the model-specific bootloader route; afterwards, recover the same wallet and set a new PIN.

A Trezor factory reset sounds scary, and done carelessly it can be. But in most situations it’s a safe, routine step, as long as you understand one thing first: a factory reset wipes the device, not your coins. Your crypto lives on the blockchain, and your Trezor is only the key that signs for it. With your recovery seed in hand, you can wipe your Trezor and restore full access afterward.
What does a Trezor factory reset do?
A factory reset, also called wiping the device, erases everything stored locally on your Trezor: the wallet, the PIN, and any device settings. Afterwards the Trezor is as blank as it was out of the box.
What a factory reset does not touch is your money. Your funds never sit on the device in the first place: they’re recorded on the blockchain, the Trezor only stores the keys that sign for them, and those keys can be regenerated at any time from your recovery seed. That’s the whole point of the seed. It is the master backup of your wallet.
Before you factory reset: one non-negotiable rule
Only factory reset your Trezor if you have your complete recovery seed, and your passphrase too if you set one.
A wipe with a valid seed is completely recoverable. A wipe without one is permanent. There is no undo, no backdoor, and no support team that can bring the wallet back, not even Trezor. So before you wipe anything:
- Find your recovery seed, which Trezor now calls the wallet backup, and confirm it’s complete and readable. It is the 12, 18 or 24 words of a BIP-39 backup, or the 20 or 33 words of a SLIP-39 backup, that you wrote down at setup.
- If you used a passphrase, make sure you know it exactly, because your seed alone will only open an empty wallet, not the hidden wallet behind the passphrase.
- If you’re unsure whether your seed is correct, verify it first with Check backup, under Settings > Device > Wallet backup in Trezor Suite. Trezor recommends this check before every wipe. The Safe 7 can also run it on the device itself, under Settings > Security > Check backup.
If you cannot find your seed, do not reset the device yet. A working device is still access to your funds, so move the funds to a new wallet first, or speak to a recovery specialist.
When should you factory reset a Trezor?
A factory reset is the right step in a handful of situations:
- You forgot your PIN and need to wipe and restore from your seed.
- You’re selling, gifting, or recycling the device and must erase your wallet from it.
- You suspect the device was tampered with or exposed, and you want a clean start (ideally with a brand-new seed).
- You’re troubleshooting a device that’s stuck, glitching, or not syncing, and a clean reset plus restore is the fix.
- You want to start fresh with a new wallet.
If your only problem is a forgotten PIN, our dedicated guide on a forgotten Trezor PIN walks through the whole flow in detail.
How to factory reset a Trezor using Trezor Suite
If you still know your PIN and can unlock the device, the cleanest way to reset is through Trezor Suite. The route is the same for the Trezor Model One, Model T, Safe 3, Safe 5 and Safe 7. This wipe removes the wallet, the PIN and settings such as the device name and passphrase settings, but it keeps the firmware.
- Connect your Trezor and unlock it by entering your PIN.
- In Trezor Suite, click the gear icon to open Settings. Its position depends on your Suite version.
- Open the Device tab.
- Scroll down to the “Danger Area” and select “Wipe device.”
- Confirm that you understand all data will be deleted and that you have a safe offline copy of your backup.
- Confirm the wipe on the device itself: Hold to confirm on the Model T and Safe 7, Tap to continue and then Hold to confirm on the Safe 5, hold the right button on the Safe 3, or press Confirm on the Model One.
Once complete, the Trezor restarts blank, ready for you to set up a new wallet or recover your existing one. The Safe 7 can also be wiped without a computer, from Settings > Device > Wipe device on the device, followed by Hold to confirm. Trezor documents this flow per model, for example the official guide on how to wipe a Trezor Safe 5.
How to reset a Trezor Safe 5
The Trezor Safe 5 follows the same path, using its touchscreen for the final confirmation. Unlock the Safe 5 with your PIN, open Settings via the gear icon in Trezor Suite, go to the Device tab, scroll to the Danger Area and select Wipe device. Then confirm directly on the Safe 5’s screen by tapping to continue and holding to confirm. The device wipes and restarts, ready for a fresh setup or a restore from your seed. If you forgot the PIN, connect the Safe 5 while swiping the touchscreen, press the button at the top right to open the bootloader menu, select Factory reset and then RESET.
How to factory reset a Trezor when you forgot your PIN
If you can’t unlock the device because you’ve forgotten the PIN, you can’t use the normal Suite wipe. Instead you enter bootloader mode and factory reset from there. According to Trezor, the way you enter bootloader mode depends on your model:
- Trezor Model One: connect the USB cable while holding the left button.
- Trezor Model T: connect the USB cable while swiping your finger across the touchscreen.
- Trezor Safe 3: connect the USB cable while holding the left button.
- Trezor Safe 5: connect the USB cable while swiping your finger across the touchscreen.
- Trezor Safe 7: with the device switched off, hold the power button until you see a blue screen, then connect by USB or Bluetooth.
Once in bootloader mode, open the device settings in Trezor Suite with the gear icon, scroll to the Danger Area, select Factory reset, tick both confirmation boxes and confirm on the device. The Safe 3, Safe 5 and Safe 7 can also start the factory reset from the bootloader menu on the device itself. Because bootloader steps can vary slightly between firmware versions, follow Trezor’s official guide for your model alongside these steps. A factory reset in bootloader mode erases the firmware too, so Trezor Suite will ask you to install it again before you restore your wallet from your seed and set a new PIN.
Entering the wrong PIN repeatedly will also wipe the device on its own once you pass the model’s attempt limit: 10 wrong entries on the Safe 7, 16 on earlier models. If you’re still guessing, stop. List your likely PINs on paper first, so a wipe happens on your terms and not by accident.
How to restore your wallet after a factory reset
Once the device is blank, restoring is straightforward as long as your seed is correct.
- Open Trezor Suite with your device connected and choose “Recover wallet” during setup.
- Enter your recovery seed in the exact order you wrote it down.
- Set a new PIN when prompted.
- If you used a passphrase, enable it and enter it to reach your hidden wallet.
- Enable any coins or accounts that don’t appear automatically.
Your balance reappears because it was never gone, only the local keys were. For a full walkthrough of the restore process and the common errors that come up, see our Trezor wallet recovery guide.
Factory reset didn’t fix it? Common issues
Most resets go smoothly, but a few things trip people up afterward:
An “invalid seed” error during restore usually means a word is misspelled, in the wrong order, or hard to read on your backup. Our guide on a lost or invalid Trezor seed phrase covers how to fix this and what’s possible if a word or two is missing.
An empty wallet after a correct seed often means a passphrase is involved. Your funds are sitting in a hidden wallet that only the passphrase can open, and the seed on its own opens an empty one. If you never set a passphrase, check that the coins and accounts you used are enabled in Trezor Suite.
If you wiped the device without a complete backup and now can’t restore, be very careful with anyone promising a guaranteed fix. Nobody can promise that. An honest Trezor recovery service will assess your case first and tell you the real odds before any work begins.
If you do bring the case to us, your coins never pass through our hands. Once access is back, you transfer them yourself to a new wallet you set up, and the agreed fee is a separate payment you make yourself.
FAQ: Trezor factory reset
Does a factory reset delete my crypto?
No. Your coins stay on the blockchain. A factory reset only erases the wallet and PIN stored on the device, and when you restore, you rebuild the wallet from your recovery seed and set a new PIN.
Can I factory reset a Trezor without the PIN?
Yes. If you’ve forgotten the PIN, you reset in bootloader mode instead of using the normal wipe in Trezor Suite. You still need your recovery seed afterwards to restore access, so confirm you have it before wiping.
Will I lose my crypto if I reset without a backup?
Yes, permanently. Without your recovery seed (and passphrase, if you set one), a wiped wallet cannot be restored by you, by Trezor, or by anyone else. Never wipe a device unless your backup is complete and readable.
How do I factory reset a Trezor Safe 5?
Unlock the Safe 5 with your PIN, open Settings via the gear icon in Trezor Suite, go to the Device tab, scroll to the Danger Area, select “Wipe device,” and confirm on the Safe 5’s touchscreen. If you’ve forgotten the PIN, connect the cable while swiping the touchscreen to enter bootloader mode and choose Factory reset there.
Does a factory reset remove the firmware?
A standard wipe through Trezor Suite keeps the firmware and only removes your wallet data and settings. A factory reset performed in bootloader mode erases the firmware as well, which is why Trezor Suite asks you to install firmware again before restoring.
How many times can I factory reset my Trezor?
As many times as you like. Wiping and restoring does not wear out or harm the device, provided you always have your recovery seed before you wipe.
