Quick answers
Is Coinbase Wallet the same as the Coinbase exchange?
No. Coinbase Wallet is the self-custody app with its own 12-word recovery phrase; the exchange login is a separate, custodial account.
Does the cloud backup replace the phrase?
It is a second, password-protected copy: useful, but the 12 words are the master backup.
What about Smart Wallets with passkeys?
Some newer Coinbase Wallet accounts use passkeys with no phrase. Access then runs through the passkey provider, which changes the recovery route.
Our Coinbase Wallet recovery services
Invalid or incomplete recovery phrase
Coinbase Wallet uses a 12-word BIP-39 recovery phrase. A misspelled, swapped or missing word usually makes the app reject it, and a different valid phrase opens a different wallet. When several words are missing or uncertain, we run a BIP-39 reconstruction: the checksum bounds the search, and each candidate is tested against an address you know. We reconstruct phrases with up to four missing words; which positions are known decides how large the search is. What to do with an incomplete recovery phrase
Forgotten cloud backup password
The optional cloud backup is an encrypted copy of your recovery phrase in iCloud or Google Drive, and restoring it requires the backup password set when it was created. Coinbase cannot reset that password. A cloud backup whose password is forgotten remains a recovery target: where the encrypted backup can be copied, we run a password search against the copy, built around what you remember. How much of the password's structure you recall decides feasibility. Wallet password recovery
Forgotten passcode, lost phone or deleted app
The crypto stays on the blockchain, not on the phone. The app passcode or PIN only protects the app locally and does not replace the phrase: Coinbase's route for a forgotten passcode is to restore the wallet from the 12 words or the cloud backup. On any device that still opens the wallet, write the phrase down before you sign out or uninstall. Without the phrase or a cloud backup, access depends on other usable material, such as an exported private key or surviving wallet data. Wallet on a phone
Lost passkey on a Smart Wallet or Base Account
These accounts replace the seed phrase with a passkey, often synced through iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager. First check the recovery methods already configured: another device or account that still holds the passkey, or a recovery phrase set up beforehand or retained during an upgrade from Coinbase Wallet. Coinbase's Recover Passkey page uses that phrase, and each signer change costs a network fee on every chain you use. A backup phrase cannot be added after all access has been lost; if yours is incomplete, the same phrase reconstruction applies. Coinbase Wallet recovery guide
Restored wallet shows a different address or zero balance
A valid phrase can belong to another wallet you created in the same app: every recovery-phrase wallet has its own phrase. One phrase also derives separate addresses for different networks. A legacy private key you imported is not part of any phrase, so it needs re-adding from its own backup. We verify which address an old phrase or key controls, checking accounts, networks and derivation paths against an address you know. Zero balance after a restore
Coins missing after the classic app closed
The classic Coinbase Wallet app closed on August 15, 2026. The recovery phrase, assets and addresses stayed the same, but the current app does not support some networks, such as Dogecoin and Litecoin. Those coins remain at their addresses, and importing the 12 words into a wallet that supports the chain reaches them, with no deadline. Not every wallet derives the same address from a phrase, so when the coins do not appear, we match derivation paths against an address you know. Coinbase classic wallet closure

Common mistakes to avoid
- Don't sign out, uninstall or reset Coinbase Wallet on a device that still opens it. Signing out removes recovery-phrase wallets from the app until each one is imported again with its own phrase.
- Don't start reinstalling or resetting anything before you preserve other usable material, such as an exported private key or surviving wallet data.
- Never enter a recovery phrase in support forms, third-party checkers or pages sent to you in messages. Use only the official recovery flow for your Coinbase Wallet or Base Account.
- Don't share the phrase with anyone who contacts you as "Coinbase support." Coinbase never asks for it.
- Never send the 12 words, the backup password or a private key to anyone, including us. The assessment needs only a description of what you have.
Information that helps the assessment
- Which product you are locked out of: Coinbase Wallet with a recovery phrase, a Smart Wallet or Base Account with a passkey, or the Coinbase exchange.
- What remains of the recovery phrase, including words that are partial or uncertain. Describe what you have; don't send the words.
- Whether a cloud backup was enabled in iCloud or Google Drive, and what you remember about its password.
- Which phones, tablets or computers may still be signed in to the wallet.
- A wallet address you know the wallet used, for example from the withdrawal history of your exchange account.
- What happened, and what you have already tried.
Boundaries
What we do not do
Theft, scams or a wrong address
A confirmed blockchain transaction cannot be reversed, cancelled or redirected, by us or by anyone.
A completely lost recovery phrase
With no phrase, wallet file, device, backup or partial information left, there is nothing to reconstruct from.
Guaranteed outcomes
No honest service can guarantee success. Whether recovery is possible depends on what you still have, and the assessment tells you before you commit.
We tell you honestly what is realistic before you commit — including when the answer is no.
How it works
A clear process from first contact to handover.
Tell us what happened
Share the wallet or software name, approximate year, device, problem and what material still exists. Do not send a seed phrase, private key, password, wallet file or ID document.
Initial feasibility view
Once we have enough information, we usually explain the likely recovery route, the main uncertainties and an initial indication of duration.
Verify and agree
We verify identity and ownership or legal authority. Scope, working method, fee and sensitive-material handling are agreed in writing before sensitive work begins.
Transfer or hand over material
PGP, our secure encrypted upload environment, in-person handover or agreed shipment may be used. We request only what is needed and work with copies where possible.
Technical recovery
We test the agreed recovery route in a controlled environment. You receive meaningful updates when findings affect the outlook, scope or next decision.
Client-controlled handover
Access is handed back through the agreed route. You open the wallet and move the assets to a wallet you control; case material is then handled according to the agreement and privacy policy.
Trust
A real company with a verifiable process.
Registered & named
Registered in the Netherlands (KvK 75927276) with a named team and a physical office in Amsterdam.
A written agreement first
Scope, fee and security measures are agreed in writing before any work. If you prefer, we can sign an NDA before you share substantive case details.
Always non-custodial
We restore access; you move the coins yourself. We never hold, manage or transfer your assets.
Ownership is verified
Identity, ownership and legal authority are verified with risk-based KYC/AML checks.
Good to know about Coinbase Wallet recovery
- Wallet, not exchange. Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet, separate from the exchange account. That distinction decides everything about recovery: your phrase, not Coinbase, holds the keys. A forgotten exchange login is a Coinbase support matter; a forgotten wallet phrase is not.
- The recovery phrase. The 12 words follow BIP-39, so another wallet that supports the standard can restore them. A completely unknown phrase cannot be recreated from a public address.
- The cloud backup. Restoring it needs the backup password and the same Apple or Google account it was saved to: iCloud on iOS, Google Drive on Android. Keep that password somewhere safe too; it is the second key.
- The Base app name. In 2025 Coinbase renamed the app the Base app, and in September 2026 it returned to the Coinbase Wallet name. It is the same self-custody wallet, opened by the same recovery phrase.
- Cryptocurrency Coinbase Wallet can store. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and a set of EVM networks; coins on networks the current app no longer supports stay reachable with the phrase. See also Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin and Litecoin wallet recovery.
Coinbase Wallet recovery FAQ
Can Coinbase support recover my wallet's recovery phrase?
No. Coinbase never has access to the recovery phrase of a self-custody Coinbase Wallet, so it cannot recover or reset it. Coinbase support can help with a login to the exchange, which is a separate, custodial account.
Can I recover Coinbase Wallet without the recovery phrase?
Only through other material you still have: the cloud backup with its password (or what you remember of it), a device that is still signed in, an exported private key or surviving wallet data. A wallet created with an email address or an Apple or Google account comes back when you sign in again with that same account.
Someone claiming to be Coinbase support contacted me. Is it legitimate?
Not if they ask for your recovery phrase. Coinbase never asks for it and never has access to it. If you have already shared any part of the phrase, treat it as compromised: create a new wallet yourself and move what you still control to it.
How much does crypto wallet recovery cost?
It depends on the wallet's value and how complex the case is: our success fee runs from 20% of the recovered amount down to 2%. The exact rate is agreed in writing before any work starts — no hidden costs and no hourly rates.
Do you take custody of the assets at any point?
No. We restore access; you open the wallet and move the funds yourself. We cannot initiate a transaction on your behalf.
Do I need to send my seed phrase or password?
No — first contact needs no sensitive material, and we never ask for it through forms or chat. Under a written agreement we can work with copies of wallet files in a controlled environment, so your keys stay under your control.
What if my wallet was stolen or I was scammed?
We do not take stolen-crypto or scam cases, and blockchain transactions cannot be reversed. That is a police and legal matter.
