Decentral, the company behind Jaxx, acknowledged the issue and made improvements in later versions, but the fundamental architecture of storing sensitive data in a user-accessible directory was never fully redesigned. This vulnerability was exploited by malware that specifically targeted Jaxx users: once on the victim’s machine, the malware read the seed phrase from the app data, and the attacker drained the wallet remotely.

The rule is absolute: do not download any version of Jaxx Liberty from any source. The software is discontinued. There is no legitimate download. Any version you find online is either dangerously outdated or actively malicious. If you have already downloaded and run a Jaxx app from any unofficial source, assume your seed phrase is compromised and any funds in that wallet are at risk.
Fake Recovery Services Targeting Jaxx Users
The shutdown also triggered a wave of scam recovery services. These appear as social media accounts, forum posts, and websites that promise to “recover” stolen Jaxx funds. The pattern is always the same: they ask for your seed phrase (which gives them your remaining funds), they charge an upfront fee and deliver nothing, or they ask you to send cryptocurrency as a “processing fee” that is never returned.
No legitimate recovery service will ever ask for your full seed phrase over email, chat, or social media. No legitimate service charges an upfront fee before any work begins. No service, legitimate or otherwise, can reverse a blockchain transaction. How to Tell Whether Your Jaxx Wallet Was Compromised
Check the blockchain. Look up your wallet addresses on a block explorer (blockchain.com for Bitcoin, etherscan.io for Ethereum). If you see outgoing transactions you did not authorise, the wallet was compromised. The attacker used your private keys, obtained through the vulnerability, a fake download, or a phishing site, to move your funds.

Use a wallet that is actively maintained and regularly audited. Electrum, MetaMask, and hardware wallets like Ledger and Trezor are all actively developed with ongoing security reviews. Never store your seed phrase digitally. Write it on paper and store it in a secure, offline location. Consider a metal backup plate for fire and water resistance.
Never enter your seed phrase into any website. The only legitimate use of a seed phrase is inside a wallet application you installed from its official source. Treat any unsolicited contact about your crypto as a scam until proven otherwise. Legitimate services do not reach out to victims.
